Diamond Grading in South Africa

European Gemological Laboratory and College of Gemology
The largest independent network of gemological laboratories in the world.
The formation of E.G.L. worldwide
The president of E.G.L. Mr. Guy Margel completed his gemological
training in the United States in the late 1960's. In 1973 Mr.
Margel opened the first European Gemological Laboratory in
Antwerp. The laboratory in New York was opened in 1975 followed
by Los Angeles in 1978. E.G.L. South Africa opened in August of
1980 and the laboratories in Paris and London opened in 1981 and
1982. Laboratories opened in Tel Aviv, Seoul, Istanbul in the
90's and India in 2003. The services offered by the E.G.L.
laboratories are recognized throughout the world and the company
is an integral part of the global diamond industry.
E.G.L. South Africa
The opening of E.G.L. in August 1980 gave the polished diamond
industry a choice of laboratories in South Africa. The
acceptance of it's credentials and the grading standards of
E.G.L. by the factories and dealers world-wide allowed the
company to very quickly become a major supplier of grading
services to the industry here in South Africa. Most of the
diamonds graded by E.G.L. (South Africa) are either exported or
sold to tourists with the confidence that the grading given will
meet the standards accepted by the industry world -wide.
The formation of the E.G.L. College of Gemology
E.G.L. introduced diamond-grading courses in 1983. At that time
investing in certified diamonds was very popular, however the
public did not understand what investment grade diamonds meant
or how to read a certificate. E.G.L. devised a short course
which covered just enough for people to understand how diamonds
were graded and how to read the certificate. In 1997 the course
was re-written to cover formation of diamonds through to the
actual practical grading and pricing of diamonds. Due to the
demand for training in the field of diamonds and diamond grading
and the increase of the knowledge of the consumer it has become
evident that it is essential for the jeweller to enhance the
skills and abilities of his sales personnel. The E.G.L. College
of Gemology was set up to formally present courses to fill these
needs of the industry.
The Services of E.G.L Include:
Diamond Certification, consultations and advice on repair and re-polishing of diamonds. Further as part of its ongoing
commitment to the diamond industry E.G.L.'s College of Gemology together with the Diamond Grading laboratory offers courses in:
Polished Diamonds for the Retail Jeweller and Diamonds and Diamond Grading.
